Internship
International internship
I'm looking for an internship abroad. Spain is my first choice.
My internship experience
Software Development Intern
Second internship, 6 months
During my second internship at International Affairs Group I worked for six months as a software developer. I worked on real software products and SaaS platforms for real users and clients. This internship built on what I learned the year before, but with more independence and broader responsibility.
What I worked on
- Backend development with PHP and Laravel
- Database development and management with MySQL
- Working with Eloquent ORM
- Developing and improving features
- Analysing and fixing bugs and errors
- Testing features in a live environment
- Improving quality and security of existing systems
- Working with APIs
- Maintaining test documentation and workflows
- Collaborating with clients during SaaS product development
OnTourly
One of the biggest projects during my internship was OnTourly, a platform for artists, agents and others involved in concerts and events. It supports planning events, accommodation and various processes around artists and their activities. I mainly worked on the backend and the data flows, including dashboards for different user groups like artists and agents. My focus was on processing data logically and securely, which required a solid understanding of how the Laravel application, database and user roles were connected.
Working in a professional development team
I worked in a team of around five developers. Each developer had their own Git branch. Before code was merged it went through a code review. We had multiple stand-ups a day where we discussed what we were working on, what was finished and whether there were any blockers. This taught me that professional development is not just about writing code. Communication, planning, testing and understanding the architecture matter just as much.
What I learned
This internship showed me what software development actually looks like in practice. I learned how to understand an existing application, analyse errors, manage databases and safely make changes without affecting other parts of a system. I also got better at working independently, investigating problems properly and communicating on time when I run into something.
Software Development Intern
First internship
My first internship at International Affairs Group was my first real experience as a developer. I got introduced to professional software development and learned to work with PHP, Laravel, MySQL and Git in a real team environment.
Why go abroad?
I want to work somewhere different for a bit. Not just for the CV, but because I genuinely think working with people from a different country changes how you think. You pick up habits and ways of doing things you'd never get from staying home.
Why Spain?
I chose Spain because I want to challenge myself in a new environment while gaining international work experience. I'm interested in learning Spanish, experiencing Spanish culture and work culture firsthand, and seeing how software development teams work outside the Netherlands. After two internships, I want to take the next step by becoming more independent, adaptable and confident in an international setting. Spain gives me the chance to grow both as a developer and as a person.
What I can offer
I'm a backend developer. Here's what I can actually contribute:
- Backend work in PHP and Laravel
- Database design and MySQL
- Building and connecting REST APIs
- Working through problems on my own
- Picking things up quickly
- Taking ownership of what I'm given
What I want to get out of it
- See how a real professional team works day to day
- Learn how other developers approach the same kinds of problems I work on
- Work in a different language and culture
- Get better at communicating in a team
- Actually contribute to something that gets used
What I expect from myself
I'll do the work, ask when I'm stuck and not wait for someone to hand me everything. I'm easy to work with and I take feedback well.
