Skills
Skills
Here is what I work with. Where possible I have noted what I actually used each thing for.
Languages
PHP
My main language. I use it for everything backend.
SQL
I write queries by hand, design schemas and work with migrations.
HTML
For structuring pages, mostly through Blade templates.
CSS
Styling and layouts, mainly with Tailwind.
JavaScript
Frontend interaction and Alpine.js for smaller UI behaviour.
Backend
Laravel
My main framework. I use it for routing, Eloquent, auth, validation, APIs and Blade views.
REST APIs
I have built REST APIs in Laravel, including resource routes, JSON responses and basic versioning.
Eloquent ORM
I use Eloquent for relationships, queries and working with data. I know when to reach for raw SQL instead.
Authentication
Authentication and access control using Laravel's built-in tools.
API Integrations
Pulling in external APIs and making them work within a Laravel app.
Database
MySQL
Relational databases. I design schemas, write migrations and work with more complex queries.
ERDs
I draw ERDs before building database structures so I can see relationships clearly.
Database Design
Thinking about how data should be structured, normalised and related before writing a line of code.
Migrations
Managing schema changes with Laravel migrations so everything stays versioned.
Tools
Git / GitHub
I use Git for all my projects. Branching, committing, pull requests.
Composer
PHP dependency management.
Postman
Testing and exploring APIs during development.
Filament
I built an admin panel with Filament on the BrickleyNova project.
Blade
Laravel's templating engine for server-rendered views.
How I work
Testing & Debugging
I write feature and unit tests and test things manually, especially edge cases.
Validation
Input validation with Laravel so bad data does not get through.
AI-assisted Development
I use AI tools during development as a faster way to look things up or generate boilerplate. I always review what comes out.
A note on skill levels
I have not put percentages or ratings next to these because they do not really mean anything. What matters is whether I have actually used something. See the Projects section if you want proof.
